Finally put some bling on the pups. They are now much easier to tell apart because they have collars on! Pippa is hot pink with polka dots, Kate is light pink. Benny has a camo collar, Will had a black collar, and Marley has a blue one. They went and had their shots yesterday and everyone wanted to love them all up! This morning we worked with walking on a leash. Kate was the most stubborn but after a bit she finally walked along with only the occasional temper tantrum. Will was the best he was just so excited to be out on a new adventure! This afternoon they are enjoying the lazy dogs of summer and basking in the warm sunshine we have in Las Vegas. Lots of sleeping going on!

My little girl Montana had her first litter this week. We have been busy supplementing them with bottle feedings until her milk comes in. They are now doing great and gaining weight quickly! Tails were docked and dewclaws removed yesterday. Everyone at the vet was in love with them! We've also relocated to Las Vegas so it has been a super busy month for us all! Here are a couple of pics...

Montana is still in labor and we are waiting for Pippa to arrive! I still can't believe she had 3 boys and two girls! In order of birth we have Prince, Duke, Kate, Will and Pippa

Montana keeps getting bigger but the puppies are finally starting to drop and are no longer hiding up under her ribs. Her milk has come in so they should be here within the next 3-4 days. We are all ready to go and just waiting for them to arrive. We are going with the Royal Family theme... so the pups will be named Prince, Princess, Duke, Duchess, Count and possibly Kate if we have a hideway. Pics to come!

Rose and Jake are really growing into their personalities! Rose is very smart and independent, and has no fear! She will tackle Jack and pin him in a heartbeat, but she also knows she can squeeze into smaller spaces if she wants to hide from Jack. Jack has much more energy then Rose and is twice her size! He is always up for playing and begs and begs to get out of the kennel when he feels I have slept long enough in the morning (usually 7am!)

Jack and Rose are doing great... both have doubled in size and are getting lots of love from Daisy. I love the little white stripe on Rose's forehead.. hopefully it will grow into the perfect white ponytail when it's long enough. We are now patiently waiting for their eyes to open up and then they will start to explore. It's always fun to get some video of the puppies as they start to wobble around. Right now all they do is sleep, eat and poop.

Pups went to the vet to have their first check up. They did great! The vet removed their dewclaws and docked their tails while we were there. Daisy did not like being separated from her pups but she survived. Here are some pics from today.

I really wasn't expecting Daisy to have the puppies last night. She hasn't been resting and all stretched out like she usually is the last few days before she delivers. I'm guessing it's because of the small litter she had. We had some difficulties getting her to tie with Dewey due to the difference in size. However, I'm excited to see these two grow up!

Jack weighed in at a whopping 6.7 ounces and our cute little Rose is 5.2 ounces. Jack is going to look like Montana when his colors change, and Rose will have the black body and brown legs/face as most Yorkies look like. Both are going to be super cute! Jack is the most vocal and the biggest eater, luckily there is plenty of milk for the both of them.

Montana went down to spend some time with her Grandma Ella and Aunt Chloe, while Daisy is on full Mommy patrol. Jake is staying clear out of her visual in hopes of not upsetting her. The next few days should be pure craziness!

Well Daisy is really starting to get big, she should have the puppies by Sunday or Monday. I've set up her whelping box and she is starting to nest and get ready for delivery. I've gathered all the things I need for the whelp, so now we just sit and wait.

It will be interesting to see if litter #3 comes at the same time as the previous litters. Both litters were born on day 61 and the deliveries started between 7 and 8 pm. Since I used the same stud last year we are hoping for another 50/50 mix of boys and girls ! It will be interesting to see if they resemble the first litter or not. Right now I'm leaning towards using the names Jack and Rose, Rhett and Scarlet. However I haven't really found the last couple of names. I like Romeo but not Juliet. Sonny and Cher just aren't meshing either. However I do love the movie "The Notebook" and I like the thought of Noah and Allie.. but my new niece is named Allie. Oh well I have a week to find the right fit! LOL

Daisy's pregnancy haircut

I took Daisy to the groomers yesterday to get her haircut. I've found it's best to go super short about three weeks before delivery. There are a few reasons for this. First whelping is a messy messy messy event. The first litter Daisy had long hair and was a mess afterwards. Of course she won't let me take her away from the puppies long enough for a bath for at least 5 days. It was a long smelly 5 days! So now I shave her down, it makes it easy for the puppies to get to her teats as well. Then I can just use a large wet wipe to clean her up after the whelping is completed. It's also easier to visualize the puppy coming out of the birth canal if there is not a lot of hair in the way.

I'm not too good at palpating the puppies at the 4 week mark but I'm getting better. I definitely felt a few puppies on each side so she will have at least 4 puppies. Since they are coming around Valentines day I've been playing around with a few famous couples names to use for the puppies. I'm definitely going to use Romeo and Juliet, maybe Sonny and Cher too. I'd love help from my readers, so please let me know of any cute couple names that come to mind!

Montana and Daisy went to Petco to get their grooming done. The grooming went really well but I was quite upset about the bill. Petco is now nickle and diming you in the groom department. If you use them as a groomer make sure you find out up front what they are going to charge you for. I was charged $18 each for dematting (they weren't that matted!) and an additional $12 for brush outs! If you can make that much money brushing out a dog I might have to pick up a part time job. I'll be looking for a new groomer because spending $76 for a haircut is pure insanity to me.

Brooks is going to his new home this week, it will be interesting to see how Montana gets along without a playmate. I am working on potty training outside so I can put the potty papers away. The stairs on the deck are still a bit icy and scary so we've been going in the front yard. Today was a beautiful day so we stayed outside and played in the sun for a bit. Brooks and Montana love exploring and finding sticks to chew on. They especially love chasing each other and seeing how close they can get to the road before I make them come back!

Tiki and Bella (aka Reagan) have joined their new families over the last week. I really am so happy with the families they went with. They are absolutely the perfect match for each puppy! Tiki is my quiet one that loves to cuddle or hide under the couch. Bella is my little princess that needs a lot of attention! She went to a family in Idaho and she is being spoiled to death! They have promised to send pictures and I can't wait to see her with her new family which include a daschund and a boxer/dalmation mix! Daisy has weaned the puppies but that doesn't stop them from trying to get a drink. She quickly growls and moves away if they try to nurse on her now. She is busy teaching them the appropriate manner of play and biting. They like to gang up on her to make it a fair fight.

Aw my sweet little Montana, she connected with me from day 1. I knew I was going to keep one of the little girls, but I wasn't sure which one. All my girls are such sweethearts and I'd love to keep them all, but that is just too many dogs to have in one house. So over the last 8 weeks I've been watching to see who would fit best with my little group. Montana looks just like Daisy did when she was a puppy. She's also just so sweet and calm and playful. I'm excited to see her grow up!

Reagan is my adventurer. She is always looking for something else to do. She loves to play with the toys, tackle the fake tree, or start a game of tug of war. I'm currently working with her since she is also the most vocal of the group. She uses her cute little sad puppy face to get her way! However I think I'm winning the war as she is toning down her whining. She will definitely need to go to a family with a lot of kids to give her the attention she wants.

Tiki is the smallest male and the most timid of the group. He likes to hang out and just watch, but will join in when he wants to. He's very smart and patient in getting what he wants. He knows the other puppies will tire of their toy and he will just wait for that to happen. He will then move in and take the toy to his hiding spot. He's not very happy when I raid his hiding spot to bring all the toys back out for everyone to play with. But he will just patiently take them back one by one....

Everyone at the vet office fell in love with them. Especially the little boy that wanted to hold them and take them home with him! So cute! This is our tiniest little girl barely hitting 20 ounces at 4 weeks old. She such a sweet little girl and loves to snuggle and sleep with the other puppies. She reminds me so much of Ace from Daisy's litter last year. A total sweetheart! Her are some pictures I took of her in the Santa baby dress I found at the store today. She just can't find a comfortable position....

Daisy's milk has come in and the puppies are getting big! She is no longer curling up to sleep but is all stretched out trying to give the puppies some room. She is sleeping and building up her reserves by eating all sorts of fattening food. This morning she had a scrambled egg with cheese and was in heaven! I can already feel her backbone poking out so I need to make sure she is eating. She isn't due until Friday but I think they will be here by Wednesday. I've made an appointment with her vet for Tuesday to make sure everything is ok. This morning I counted 5 heartbeats! This is my favorite part of the pregnancy as you can see and feel the puppies moving around. One of them gave me a high five this morning! Ha!

Why I love Shorkies!

Daisy and I were having a lazy morning today. Her poor belly is getting so big and she's to that state where she just likes to lay all stretched out on the bed. I'm so excited for the new puppies to join our crazy little home! The thing I love most about this breed is how cuddly they are all the time. I've never met another dog that actually puts their arms around you when you pick them up for a cuddle! It's also fun to have a dog that is just as loving to others when they come to visit. This may be a bit much if your not a dog lover, but Daisy just lavishes all her love onto anyone that comes to visit us.

Her puppies were very much like this as well. I love the look of the Yorkie, but not so much the skittish personality and they can be quite yappy as well. My neighbor has a Yorkie her name is Ebony. I love Ebony and I'm pretty sure Ebony is quite fond of me as she loves to hang out in my yard! However, after knowing her for two years I have yet to ever hold her. She lets you get just close enough to think you might pet her, before she runs away. So by mixing the Yorkie with the Shih Tzu I get a teeny tiny dog that looks very similar to a Yorkie, but is sweet and loving like a Shih Tzu. Its the best of both worlds!

I have shaved Daisy's belly and we are in the two week countdown to whelping day! I went over to Kim's to get all the puppy supplies, and will be putting her whelping box together later today. It's definitely the calm before the storm right now!

Daisy's belly is really starting to grow now poor thing. When I came home last night she was crawling to me all stretched out on her belly. She can still curl up for now but that won't last for much longer. I will get pics up soon, I am waiting for her to outgrow a bad haircut first.

Daisy is showing all the signs of pregnancy!! I won't know for sure how many little ones are growing in there for a bit, but I'm so excited for the puppies to come. I told the cute little neighbor kids that she's pregnant, so they come over everyday to see if she has had the puppies. I keep telling them not until September, but I think they just keep hoping.

They may be building some type of nest for her. Every morning I come out and find more and more little stacks of twigs on my porch. Should I tell them the puppies are born in a cardboard box, or let them exhaust their creative minds?

I will try to get more updates going... this is finals week and then just one more semester until I'm done with school! Besides updates right now would be soooo boring. Puppy updates are always so much more exciting!

Oh for those of you interested in a puppy, please let me know soon. Three have already been spoken for and I'm really not anticipating a larger litter then she had last year. :)

What a crazy year it has been! Daisy's first litter will soon be turning 1! I can't believe how cute they still are and how super tiny! I thought for sure they would be closer to Daisy's size. Bentley still comes over weekly to play with Mom and sadly that is ending soon. He's about half her size and around 4 lbs. Still super cuddly and such a sweet little guy. He loves to have Jake and Daisy chase him around the table, and it takes the two of the to wear him out.

I would love to get pictures from the other owners if they keep up with the blog. Daisy's heat cycle started yesterday. I've got a few Yorkie studs to meet with this week before I decide which one to go with. They are all 3 lbs so the puppies should be small like the last litter. I'm hoping for more girls this time but will be happy either way. The puppies will be ready in time for Christmas and will be fun to play with in the fall.

My friend Claudia had a litter of pure bred Shih Tzu's at the end of March. They are the cutest most adorable little puppies ever! They will be super tiny as both parents are Imperial sized at 6 lbs. Claudia also makes the cute little diapers that Daisy wears during her heat cycle. She is such a dog lover and these puppies have been incredibly spoiled and loved as they have grown up. The puppies are 10 days old and here are some updates! The first pic is Cooper the only boy and the biggest puppy! He's doing great!

This sweet girl is Prada, she is getting more color to he face. All the puppies noses are now starting to turn brown instead of pink

Here is the whole crew! You can see how tiny Chloe is compared to her sisters, she is getting some supplemental feeding with a bottle. Oreo is the smallest of the brown and white crew, she is under Cooper and Halen but is doing well.

Here is the first born.. she is white but has a tint of caramel when you put her next to her two sisters. She is the biggest of the girls and likes to be in charge. So cute! Kim is home so she has given all the pups temporary names...

This is the only one that came out with a scream! She was breech and her poor mom shreiked when she came out. But all went well and she was quickly feeding along her siblings. She has the most brown coloring. Here she is curled up with Prada and Kate

This one is doing great, she loves to hang with her sisters. For some reason the white ones all bunch up together and the brown and white ones bunch up together. But sometimes they all pile up in a heap. As you can see its hard to tell Kate and Chloe apart!

Baby girl was the fifth to be born and I thought the last! She is the tiniest of them all. Born at 5 oz and is having a hard time latching on to a teat not just mommy's belly. I have been working with her by feeding her with a bottle and she has finally caught on. I have been putting her alone with mom to try and get more weight on her. She's so cute!

This morning I weighed all the puppies, only two have gained weight. So we are starting some bottle feedings to supplement what Ella can provide for them. This will help them gain weight as well as relieve Ella a bit. Ella is pigging out on all sorts of food to put some weight on, but that is not going to happen for a few more weeks.

We did run into one problem. I used a sharpie on the three white ones to differentiate them, and it has disappeared! One of the white girls is more of a caramel white so I can tell her apart. However the other two are exactly alike. The only way I can currently tell them apart is by the length of their umbilical cord. Kim will need to come up with something else to tell those two apart.

Everyone is doing really well! Here is a pic of them sleeping, all lined up. I have a heating pad under the blanket to help keep them warm.

Ella went into labor around 9pm tonight and at 9:30 the first of five girls was born. The second born was the only boy of the group. We had one that was breech, but everything went well and they are all doing great. Here are some pics of the crew!

Puppywatch 2009 day three...

Around 2am this morning I was woken by Ella. She was anxious and pacing and I thought this is it! After about 10 minutes and trying out the whelping box, her bed, Daisy's bed, a patch of carpet in the hallway, and her bed again she curled up and went to sleep. Around 4am we went through this scenario again. At 5am my alarm went off and we went outside for a potty break then I got ready for work. I hate that I have to work today, but I'm hoping to be done by noon. My good friend Steph just checked on Ella and she is pretty calm. She seems to be calm during the day, and pacing all night long. If she doesn't deliver tonight I am going to take her down to Kim's and see if being in her normal environment will help her to deliver.

There isn't much more room for those puppies to grow. I keep feeling paws poking out through her ribs. I've counted 4 heartbeats but I think at least one puppy is hiding under her ribs and is too close to her heart to hear the difference. Everyone say a little prayer that the hospital stays slow so I can go home. :)

Puppywatch 2009 is still going strong. I thought for sure Ella would deliver the puppies last night. Her belly has dropped more today and she is very uncomfortable. Her breathing has become more labored and she just can't get comfortable. She is drinking a lot of water and licking anyone she can. She loves to go outside and lay down on the cool ground to try and get some comfort. She has checked out the whelping box a few times but has not really done any nesting at this point. Her temperature dropped to 98.7 last night and is back up to 99.6 today, so we will continue to wait....

Daisy's Mom Ella is staying with us this week. She is due to have her puppies at anytime. It's been an interesting day, I have three generations of dogs in my house. Ella, her daughter Daisy, and her Grandson Bentley. Daisy and Bentley love to play and Ella sure wants to join in but that will have to wait until the puppies are born.

Ella is doing really well. Her milk came in on Wednesday and her temp dropped to 98.7 at 7pm tonight. So she should have the puppies within the next 24 hours. I think they will come sometime in the middle of the night. She is sleeping really deep right now, not even waking up when you walk by her. She is drinking a lot of water, but not eating any food. Her belly has dropped and she officially has the "swelly belly" going on. She keeps wanting to go outside but when I take her she just looks for poop to eat. So we are staying inside now, especially since some creepy fog has rolled in. This would not be a good time to lose Ella.

Good thing we had a lazy day because I feel we are going to have a long night ahead of us. I will put up some pics soon.

My friend Kim may be having a new litter towards the end of January. Her Shih Tzu Ella was able to have a successful tie with Max the poodle. We are just waiting a few more weeks to confirm the pregnancy. Bentley's first haircut...

Sometimes I forget how tiny these puppies are. Usually a good bath refreshes my mind that most of their size comes from their fluff! Trina brought Bentley over for a visit, and he has had his first haircut. His fluff is gone and he is just soooooo tiny! He is weighing in at 3.5 lbs!

He has been having a fun day of playing with his mom and snoozing on my lap. We even went out to the store to pick up some more dog treats. Here are some super cute pics of him!

Bentley is getting so big! Daisy is so excited when he comes to stay for a few days. They love to wrestle and play with each other.

I lucked out... a few days after Ace left, Bentley came back for a visit. Daisy and Bentley played for 3 hour straight! She was very excited to have Bentley around, she just can't play with Jake the way she can with her pups.

Last Thursday little Ace went to his family. He was so excited to see them and I know he will be well taken care of, with a family of 7 he may not get to walk much!

I'm sad that all the little puppies are gone, they have been so much fun to have around the house. I'm grateful that they were all able to go to such wonderful new families. I will continue to update when I receive pictures from their families. Of course Bentley still comes over a few times a week when his Mom goes to work. Which helps me continue to get my puppy fix!

Funny thing about Bentley is he is the Houdini of the group. Try to contain him to an area and given some time he will figure a way out. When Trina drops him off this week we are going to see how he does with a doggie door. Or course I'm going to have to do a boundary check to make sure he can't get out of the back yard.

I will post some pictures later tonight of Ace's family. I was in such a rush to get packed I didn't get a picture of Duke's new family, but I'm hoping they will email me one soon.

My friends son DJ loves to come and play with the puppies. He is so good with them and they just love him to death. We went outside to let the puppies run and the girls from the neighborhood came over to see the puppies. They are so much fun to watch. The girls love to scream and giggle as the puppies chase them. I was checking out to see what others in my area are selling their shorkies for today. I'm still convinced that my puppies are the cutest of them all! Shorkies are a super cute breed to start with, but I really wanted that teddy bear/ baby doll face. I find that most Yorkies have too long of a snout, or their nose is a bit larger then I like. When I found Dante I knew he'd be a perfect match for Daisy. Both have cute little noses as well as that adorable baby doll face. His coloring is incredible as well. I believe that is why Lenny has such a gorgeous carmel color. I haven't seen another Shorkie with this color and I absolutely love it!

Unfortunately another seller in this area has the same blog template as I do. I'm not sure if they have copied mine or we are just two great minds thinking alike. So I decided to change the template to differentiate from theirs. I'm thrilled with the new look. I love the brown pink mix and think this matches better then the argyle one I had before.

Tori goes to her new family Monday so I've been spending extra time with her. I sort of dragged my feet putting up an ad for Duke and Lenny because I just love having them around so much! I know there is a special family out there that needs them, but it is really hard to let them go.

Now that Bentley is gone, Daisy eyes me cautiously if I head outside with one of her babies. I took Tori down to Blockbuster today, as I'm still working with her on her car anxiety. When we got back and she reunited with everyone they swarmed her. I guess they can sense that they will soon all be leaving each other. This morning we all curled up on the couch for a long cuddle fest. I really have lucked out to have such good puppies that love to cuddle and entertain me. :)

A friend from work decided she wanted to have Bentley be part of her family, so tonight she picked him up and they headed home. Bentley and I waited outside and when Trina showed up Bentley raced across the yard and into her arms. I'm so excited for his new adventure but had to shed a tear as he headed on his way. The Puppies still love to be on the couch but can't quite get on the couch without help. I've put a cushion on the ground so they can jump down onto it. But they just aren't big enough to jump up on the couch, no matter how hard they try. So I see this view a lot! Pleeeease let me up!!
